Chimney safety & advice

Common questions about chimney sweeping, creosote, fuels and safety, answered by Dorset Chimney Chaps. Tap any question to read the answer.

Why choose a sweep from a registered association?

All chimney sweep companies registered with a government-approved body have undergone an adequate training programme. A registered sweep will correctly complete the job to a high standard, and can issue the documentation your insurer may ask for.

How long does it take to sweep a chimney?

It typically takes around 45 minutes. If your chimney sweep is in and out quickly, they are not doing the sweep properly. Your sweep will advise where necessary.

FUELS, CREOSOTE & SWEEPING

Questions we are asked most

How often should a chimney be swept?

Regular sweeping prevents issues like inefficiency in burning and chimney fires. How often depends on how much you burn and what you burn, so we will advise on a schedule that suits your appliance.

What is creosote, and why does it matter?

Creosote is a flammable deposit that builds up inside the flue, particularly when burning unseasoned or wet wood. Left unchecked it narrows the flue, reduces draw and increases the risk of a chimney fire, which is why regular sweeping matters.

Can I burn wet or treated wood?

No. You should avoid wet wood, painted timber, treated wood, MDF, rubbish or household waste. Burn dry, seasoned wood for a cleaner flue and better heat. Some appliances can also burn smokeless fuels, but only if the stove is designed for it.

Can you use coal in a log burner?

Not always. Many wood-only stoves are designed for logs and should not burn house coal. Using the wrong fuel can damage the stove and shorten its lifespan.

How do I know if my stove is the right size?

The right size depends on room size, insulation levels, ceiling height and layout. As a rough guide, smaller rooms may need a 4–5kW stove, while larger open-plan spaces may need more. We are happy to advise.

What about ventilation?

Adequate ventilation is required for safe and efficient burning. Please ventilate the room or leave windows open before our visit where possible, and we can check that your appliance has the airflow it needs.

Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm?

Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, so an alarm is the only reliable warning. We supply and fit CO alarms where needed and will advise on what your home and appliance require.

Which appliances do you sweep?

Log burners, multi-fuel stoves, open fires, range cookers, Rayburns and gas flues. Fully insured, with a digital certificate provided with every sweep and a paper copy on request.
